JOE AVOLIO


A native of Buffalo, NY, Joe first moved to Athens in 1996.  A lifelong player and fan of the game, Joe began coaching soccer in 2006.  He has been a coach at Athens United for six years and has coached in the Developmental, Academy and Select programs.  Joe has also been a licensed physical therapist for 20 years and is the director for the Atlanta Falcons Physical Therapy Centers in Athens and Winder, GA.  Joe actively incorporates his knowledge of biomechanics, motor development and injury prevention into his training routines for soccer.  He looks forward to sharing his expertise with the players and parents at Athens United for years to come.


CHRISTIAN ALLEN


Christian grew up a multi-sport athlete in an Army family and played youth soccer from early childhood through high school, including stints at clubs in England and Germany.  He enjoyed a successful career in competitive judo at the United States Military Academy where he also earned the U.S. Army Master Fitness Trainer certification.
Christian later earned a PhD in economic geography at the University of Cincinnati and then spent five years on faculty at the University of Georgia, earning major teaching awards at both institutions.  He is a professionally licensed coach through the United States Soccer Federation, including the National 'A' and National Youth licenses.  Christian has coached continuously at Athens United since 2003 and is currently Head Coach for U10 Academy boys and U17 Select boys.

CARLO FINLAY

Carlo Finlay is currently the head coach of the U11 Girls team at Athens United.  Prior to coaching this team, he was head coach of the U15 Girls team at Athens United. He earned his National 'D' coaching license in February of 2013.  Carlo grew up in Athens and has played soccer for more than 25 years.  Carlo earned both his undergraduate and his law degrees from the University of Georgia.  Along with coaching soccer, Carlo currently works for UGA as an academic advisor in the Grady College of Journalism & Mass Communication.

I have always loved the game of soccer. I played Varsity soccer in high school at OCHS. I coached at OVP for 2 years and came to AUSA in 2011 in the Developmental program. With Athens United I have coached several teams in both the Developmental and Academy programs. I coached the boys and girls middle school teams at Saint Josephs Catholic School in Spring 2014. I am presently working with the U9 Academy Boys and the U17 Select Boys teams.

I played for Athens YWCO from u4 to u16. I played my u17 year for GFC and finished out club for TYSA. I played high school soccer for Cedar Shoals and college for Young Harris. I have been coaching for 8 years. 7 years with Athens United and 2 years with Emmanuel College. I have coached two years of girls high school soccer, one with North Oconee and currently with Clarke Central. I have a USSF D license and a NSCAA National Diploma.

TREY SCOTT

 
Trey Scott works full time at The Athens Orthopedic Clinic Sports Performance and Rehab Center.  He received his athletic training degree from High Point University where he also played collegiate soccer.  He later earned his Masters in Physical Therapy from the Medical College of Georgia.  Trey brings a passion for improving athletic performance through prevention and rehabilitation of sport-related injuries.  
Trey holds a USSF "D" license and has been active coaching at AUSA since 2008 when his oldest child started playing.  Whether he is coaching or walking the sidelines, his primary goal is enhancing athlete safety during sports participation. He is married to his wife Anna, and they have 3 children.

PAUL THORNTON


Paul Thornton holds a NSCAA National Diploma, NSCAA Advanced Regional Diploma, NSCAA High School Diploma, and two NSCAA Special Topics “Reading the Game” diplomas.  Paul joins Athens United this year after 9 years of coaching experience at Apalachee High School and 8 years of Academy/Select experience at nearly every age group and competitive level.  After graduating from UGA in 2004, Paul taught elementary school in Barrow County from 2005-2015.
